This is the reason stuff like this takes hold...well, I think the government needs more power when it comes to limiting the bad things other people have, but they'd never dare to use their unlimited power to take away something their supporters like!
Even without some sort of one-party system, they can probably eventually cut and snip at it until it's functionally defunct as they are trying with other social programs, public schools, public libraries, etc. They could have an effective long term plan to hamstring things and then say "Look how inefficient and wasteful it is. Let us remove them and we will totally replace them with something awesome within the next 2 weeks."
The GOP fought these programs tooth and nail when they were implemented in the first place. Ron Reagan was quoted as saying, "The most frightening words you could ever hear are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"
These are socialist based programs in nature hence socialism, so yes it goes against everything the GOP is about no matter how much it helps the American people. However, the fact is you'll never see any of the GOP sending their checks back to the SSI fund b/c they don't believe in it.
