Maybe they tried to negotiate with him and he was only concerned with the money. I won't assume the worst, as I have been trained to do after 32 years as a Bengal fan.  ASSUMING that money goes to Burrow/Higgins/Chase.

You lose quality pieces in FA when you assemble a good team. That's just how it is. I'd written Bates off using that logic and I have no qualms with us not giving him the money Atlanta did. But if we can't get an able-bodied replacement for Bell in FA this year, we've weakened our team considerably. Losing both starting safeties is a great thing when you have shitty starting safeties. We had good ones.
