Pharmaceutical companies LOVE chronic diseases. It means medication dependency for life. Humira, a medication for rheumatoid arthritis, colitis, psoriasis, and other inflammatory diseases is the best-selling medication in the US. It costs around $3500/dose. I suspect that by next year the #1 selling medication is likely to be Ozempic or some other medication in that category. The top-selling medication list is all about chronic disease. Pharm companies do very little research into infectious diseases. There is no long-term money in it for them as once the illness is cured the patient doesn't need pharm support any longer.
As for the NIH, their funding covers a lot of categories. Genetics, cancer, brain disorders, and neuroscience are among a number of areas that receive more money than infectious diseases. A whole lot of money is spent on dementia and other diseases of aging
What Kennedy doesn't get is that infectious disease is often the precursor to chronic disease.
Infectious diseases (bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitical) can spread quickly and kill hundreds, thousands, and millions just as quickly as we saw with COVID. If the government doesn't do the research, who will?
More money should be spent on medical research but that's not going to happen. Just because Kennedy is an idiot who believes that vaccinations are worse than the potential effects of the illnesses they strive to prevent or minimize doesn't mean we are all that stupid.
