Why do Democrats fear a 3rd Party Candidate?

Honestly, after Trump the Republican Party has no one that moves the needle, and I could completely envision the Democratic Party splitting into two parties, one of moderates and one of the extreme progressives.  Those moderates, along with moderates from a dying Republican Party could actually form a new Party that represents the biggest share of Americans.
