It's not about playing it safe. Your average thumb fracture in your Average Joe will heal in 6-8 weeks. A professional athlete will be able to play in 4-6 weeks. Unless something unforeseen happened or they're being deliberately misleading as usual, that fracture should be fully healed and after 8 weeks of healing throwing a football won't make a fracture worse or delay the healing of a fracture.
