the funny thing is, this IMO, goes back to something very important about Trump and his attitude/temper.
One of the writers for his Roast has openly said Donald doesn't understand jokes or get them. He takes every joke personally and holds it against someone even if he doesn't show it outright.
What Rubio originally said was clearly just a play on the "big hands/feet/long nose means big dick" thing to loop it humorously into not trusting Trump.
Trump immediately latched on to the penis size joke (which wasn't even actually made) and ignored the trustworthiness brought into question. Why? Because he doesn't understand jokes and how they work. So in essence, the joke worked flawlessly for Rubio because the actual point went so far over Trump's head.
