And I think that is the exact point for many people.

They are not blaming just one side or the other.  They are often blaming religion in general.  The crusades are just a great example of how the Christians can be just as aggressive and bloodthirsty as Islam. 

Christianity is less violent now, but there are many complex geographical and cultural reasons for that.  Both religions praise their backgrounds involving bloody conquests for land and power.  And both religions have been used to drive the masses to war.
