Party affiliation is a lot like religion. It is usually determined by family and/or surrounding society. I have a daughter who is 9 years old but she is a gifted student. I have discussed political issues with her. I don't get too detailed and try to make sure she really understands the basics before I discuss complex ideas. But there are kids in her class who hate Obama or love Obama and don't even know why. It is clearly just something they have heard among their families.
And while it is easy to criticize people who vote along a strict party line, it actually makes more sense than voting based on hand size, age, email accounts, or drug use 30 years ago. Also people are constantly being bombarded with one-sided, self-serving rhetoric from both sides. So it is actually takes some time and effort to find out what is really going on. For people who are not interested in politics it is easier to just vote for the party that generally supports the same positions as they do.
And there will never be a viable third party in the United states until there is massive campaign finance reform.
