You don't, or at least you shouldn't, draft guys in the first round for depth.  You draft them to contribute and to play.  By sitting them on the bench for 3-4 years, you're basically losing the advantages of the current rookie pay scale... you're left wondering what exactly they can do while working on extensions or debating about picking up the fifth year option.
