Me, personally, I think the standard should be that if a candidate is on the ballot in enough states to garner the 270 necessary electoral votes then they should be allowed on the stage for the GE debates.

Of course, I want to go popular vote for POTUS, so that would thwart this idea. But if we are going to have an EC then we might as well use it as a measuring stick for something like this. I'm not sure what to use if we went popular, though.

I'm all for that setup.

Don't need to worry about the popular vote caveat though, popular vote will never happen unfortunately.
