I would agree that linking this guy to Trump was just a red-herring if Trump had not picked one of the most extreme homophobic politicians out there to be his vice-president.

So this is not a random attempt to link bad press to Trump.  Instead it is a comment about how Trump intentionally chose to recruit the anti-LGBT community by picking Mike Pence as his running mate.
