The reason they get away with it is because they're the winningest team of the super bowl era. They're media darlings. They lead the league in bandwagon fans. They're huge moneymakers... All mainly because of the teams of the 70's. Maybe if we won a super bowl or two we'd be media darlings as well. Be labeled as a team that plays "tough, hard-nosed football" and not "dirty hitting Bengal thugs". It's not right but it is what it is. Our perception nationwide won't change unless we start winning when it counts. Winning truly does cure all.
Prior to the 70's, the steelers were a joke. Far worse than our first few decades of existence. But you'll never hear the media or fans talk about that (hell, 90% of steeler fans probably don't even know their team's history and will ignorantly spout how they've "always been good"). If they can put together a dynasty, so can anyone. I believe we have a lot of pieces in place... Just need the right people on the staff to get them there.
