Still dont know why this is a thing.

You are either smart or not idgaf what color you are.

There have been studies that have shown that diversity is a valuable asset in an educational setting. Unfortunately, without programs to actively seek out a diverse student body we end up with a very white washed group of students. There are still barriers to entry for many minority students that go beyond just how smart they are. After all, this isn't just about intelligence when it comes to college admissions, they look at a lot of other factors and some of those put students of minority groups at a disadvantage. Then there is somewhat of an inherent bias that people have. It'a not active, it's not conscious, but it happens. This is why affirmative action programs have been pushed for and have proven to have a positive effect on the student bodies and cause positive externalities.

Now, a couple of things. Using race as a primary qualifier or setting quotas have both been deemed unconstitutional. If you have two students with equal or similar qualifications, and one is a minority and one is not, the minority will get the spot. That's the way most of these programs work. I know it's contrary to what a lot of the reporting on the topic says it is, but most of it is used to create fear among white people that they are being oppressed by a growing set of minority groups.

Now, I will address the comment that was made previously about higher standards for Asian admissions. Asian students have a higher rate enrollment in higher education than their proportion of the population. An ideal situation is for a university to be a microcosm of the wider community and having demographic proportions that mirror the community. Now, raising or lowering standards for a particular race is not right, and is technically illegal, so that shouldn't be. But this is just an explanation as to why there may be a higher standard for Asian students over other minorities.
