There's a disdain for the educated. Blue collar jobs have dried up as our economy has changed and people who did quite well without a formal or college education are struggling. Republicans have done a good job telling them that it's the liberals fault and that every time they extend the rights of some minority class that it is at the expense of them. They've turned to religion and have been told that's being attacked too. 

Now, despite being outnumbered by millions, the electoral map is in their favor. To hell with what the educated experts say. There's a millionaire in office! He knows more than them!
