Important: NFL Rules for Interviewing Coaches

Marvin Lewis is correct when he says coaching the Bengals in 2018 is "complicated."  The NFL sets rules for scheduling interviews with current head coaches, coordinators, and position coaches which are found here:

For example, there are different rules for interviewing assistant coaches who are on playoff teams vice those who are not.  Please read this because it matters.  Knowing these rules will cut down on rumor, speculation, and consumption of Tums, Jack Daniels, and presumably crack.  In fact -- and I can't believe I'm saying this - it might be best to wait until coaches whose teams are eliminated in the playoffs to interview them.  Similarly, other teams can interview any Cincinnati coach right now as the Bengals are not in the playoffs.  This makes things very complicated, just as Marvin said.

It's been that way for quite awhile, including the last time the Bengals hired a head coach. The Giants, for example, have already requested permission to interview McDaniels and Patricia. If the Bengals actually wanted to, they could do the same.
