A (Brief) History of the NRA

People who own guns should have an association that defends them against the government taking their guns.  And I can even see the NRA side on some arguments about limiting "assault weapons"  and high capacity magazines.

However there is not one single logical argument against requiring gun owners to be licensed and guns to be registered to specific owners. The only way the NRA has to fight against theses is too use fear mongering and claim that if there is ever a gun registry then people will be unable to stop the government from confiscating all of their weapons.  But it just does not work that way.  Passing a law for gun registration has zero to do with passing a law to confiscate all weapons.  anyone can agree to a gun registry and still oppose outlawing all guns.

Although a popular refrain from the NRA is "enforce current laws" instead of passing new laws the fact is that it is impossible to enforce the current laws without more laws.  Requiring background checks is a joke because private individuals can sell guns to whomever they want with no background check.  Police do not have the time to do acomplete criminal history and mental health evaluation on every person they encounter with a gun.  And if a gun is found in a car or other location where there are convicted criminals it only takes one person with no record to claim ownership of the gun to keep the police from taking it (unless there is some other evidence).

Since 80% of all gun violence is committed by a person who is not the legal owner of the gun it seems that NO ONE would have any reason to oppose laws that do not limit gun ownership by law abiding citizens but help keep guns out of the hands of criminals.  So why does the NRA do this?  Because they represent gun makers and criminals are a huge part of the gun market.  If they eliminated criminals from the market for guns demand would drop and so would the profits of gunmakers.

It is all about the money.
