Well, I think one of the common themes here has been very unstable, if not mentally unstable, people committing these acts. And I think, in part, that has been exacerbated and fueled by the disgusting national rhetoric of police violence.
Could also be that, just like every questionable cop shooting is now national news, every cop injured or shot in the line of duty is going to be national news.
