Lots of theories on that, but the thing is just that is what the founders used to give a theme to the organization. We all know the story of how the organization was really founded, so there is no hiding that, but it gives a level of mystery to it all. It is problematic in some ways, relying to much on American Indian culture, but some of us try hard to establish good relationships with local tribes. For instance, my lodge worked a lot with the Monacan tribe in the area, utilizing materials from them and inviting them to events.
