I don't understand why these discussions are always all or nothing. A day 1 free agent every now and then isn't a horrible thing. Especially when you're close. However, wanting the Bengals to more active does not mean you want them to spend all of their cap on day 1. There is a middle ground that exists and it would be possible for the Bengals to sign more impactful free agents without the big spending.
