To get the "brink," you would have to go way beyond the US filling the Gulf with US military assets and threatening annihilation and Iran shooting down a US drone and then US putting planes in the air for a military strike expected to kill some 150 Iranians before the US backed down.
No different from those times when we had planes in the air to strike Russia or N Korea.
"If Syria didn't shoot back, why would Iran?" said the Joint chiefs to Trump and the NSC. "They are both in the Middle East so they would respond the same way. Any way, Iran couldn't beat Iraq back in the '80s. So one way or the other it doesn't matter."
