Because he was sucking and benching him gave them the best chance to win, which they did.

The Steelers most likely benched Mason because he still seemed rattled from last week's debacle and they had another young QB on the gameday who had shown promise earlier in the year in a start against the Chargers. 

That in no way explains why a team should go back to a benched veteran who absolutely sucked against this same D earlier in the season when their rookie QB has them right on the brink of victory.

When exactly should they have benched him?

I worry about you guys some times.
