HOW NEW YORK’S BAIL REFORMS ARE PLAYING OUT IN A QUEENS COURT
#8
With technology today allowing us to track people there is no reason we should hold anyone in jail before their trial outside of violent crimes. For low level crimes use simple supervised release and for higher level crimes use tracking technology. Those violent crimes should then be expedited to trial at the quickest rate possible (jumping lower level crimes if nee be) to limit any improper detention of innocent people. I am always surprised how many people don't realize the months one could potentially be waiting in jail to prove they did not commit a crime they are innocent of. Someone's freedom should not be so easily taken, a fair trial is great but what about the months of improper incarceration before said fair trial? The fact our legal system has gotten so backlogged to the point people can spend month's in prison waiting is an embarrassment to the country as a whole.
