The problem isn't Democrats eating their own, the problem is the Republicans rarely if ever hold their own accountable. Bill Clinton lied under oath and paid the price for it and rightfully so. Trump wouldn't testify in person to Robert Mueller, instead he and his lawyers gave carefully worded responses to some of Mueller's questions. In Trump's impeachment inquiry he tried to suppress witness from testifying and when the trial came to the Republican held senate they voted against calling witnesses at all including Trump, basically sweeping"the witch hunt" under the rug. The saddest part is, in the future, presidents, both Republican and Democrat, that get caught doing wrong will employ a lot of the same tactics the current president is/has used and gotten away with, why not? Works for him. I think the biggest fool in American history is Richard Nixon, he shouldn't have resigned, if he would've held his ground, he most likely would've been let off the hook and gotten away with it too.
