As to the serpent in the garden of Eden, assuming the story to be literally true, it was a test to see if Adam and Eve would follow the 1 rule that God gave them to follow. As we all know, they failed that test.
Yes, God tested their ability to know right from wrong before they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil which would give them the ability to know right from wrong after they ate from it. Another famous logical fallacy.
