God didn't interfere with their free will. He just changed the language that they spoke.
As to the serpent in the garden of Eden, assuming the story to be literally true, it was a test to see if Adam and Eve would follow the 1 rule that God gave them to follow. As we all know, they failed that test.
God sabotaged their free-will plans by making it so they could not communicate. Why else would he have done it? He even admitted to it supposedly fearing what they could accomplish. It is in the bible.
And why would a god with perfect knowledge "test" anyone? He already knows the answer, so it becomes a pointless exercise.
