It really depends on the position as to whether I pay much attention to the 40 or not.  I don't totally dismiss it with LB's, but the thing to remember with them is that it's so easy to gain or lose .1-.2 in the 40 on the field just based on how fast you can read and react and/or how quickly you can get off blocks.
