It always comes down to the argument about if entertainment should be "realistic" or "escapism".  I'd personally prefer it at the most basic at least show people interacting and living as most do.  So having interracial and same sex couples should not be "shocking" to anyone.  

Couldn't say "damn" or "hell" on tv when I was growing up.
