So, the fact we can't even complete the first step, which is "not that big of a deal", in reaching the ultimate goal (a championship) is incredibly disappointing.

The reason people reference a playoff win is because it's specifically relevant to the Bengals.  There's no moving of the goalposts to be had because we haven't even progressed to the next step.  Of course people are going reference playoff wins.

Why would anyone bemoan the lack of AFC Championship appearances in the last 30 years when we haven't even made it past the wildcard round?

I gotta be completely honest, ANYONE that goes out of their way to defend this drought, or to deflect from it, or to paint others as being unreasonable is really something else.

The "first step" is making the playoffs.  That is what I mean by moving the goalposts.  In the early 2000's all Bengal fans talked about was "making the playoffs".  But then when we went to the playoffs 6 times in 7 years Bengal fans had to change to "winning a playoff game" as the ultimate measure of which teams were most successful.  And as soon as we win a playoff game that will no longer matter.

Not defending the drought.  Just pointing out the nature of how fans change their opinion to enhance their victim status.
