As for what makes this different? Likely because of the filming of the victim in the chokehold. That usually creates a more visceral reaction.

White guy kills a black guy, whom witnesses agree was not a danger.
and the police release him without charges.

But "progressives" were not taking note of deaths on the subway, 

mostly where the killer was unknown,

and/or not released by police after apprehension.
