I'll assume this was a "the devil you know" plan from Netanyahu...but given how it blew up in his face he will have even more answers to give to the people.
This was something I brought up almost right away. Netanyahu's government has played a huge role in elevating Hamas to the role they are in. We talk about the US arming of the Mujahideen that resulted in fighting against our own tech in Afghanistan and this goes wayyyyyyyyyy beyond that screw up.
