Could it be just that they are bad and inflated everyone's stats? 

Before today, the Browns allowed 86 yds a game on the ground on defense.
Last year they were the second worst in the entire NFL only narrowly behind the 9ers. 

I took multiple statistics classes in college, and fully understand how they work.

But cherry picking stats are not how they work.  You are intentionally throwing out the best performances to highlight the poorest ones.  What was Joe's average against Cleveland?  1.7 YPC.  Shouldn't he have had much more against such a poor Brown's run defense?  No.  Because the line sucks and doesn't consistently open holes and prevent contact in the backfield.
