Clint Boling, the Bengals’ most experienced and versatile offensive lineman with the majority of his 109 starts at left guard, announced his retirement Monday at age 30 after being shelved all spring dealing with a blood clot.

After meeting with variety of specialists following the discovery of the clot in January, Boling felt like he made the tough, but only decision he could for his wife and two daughters ages three and one.

"There’s no doubt in my mind if I ‘m 22, 23 years old with no wife, no kids and it’s just me playing football, I’m making a different decision," he said.

This was the worst kept secret on the Bengals that he was done.

I was holding out hope that he would return, but the fact that we had signed two free agent guards made me think Boling might be done.

Right now Westerman is getting the first team reps. Hope he is as good as some here claim.

Respect his decision, but boy is this a bad thing for our already crappy offensive line.

Thankful for the dedicated years of service that Boling provided. He has been a mainstay at LG for quite a few years.

With that said, the OL now looks like this...

OT - Glenn, Hart, ???
OG - Miller, Jerry, Westerman, Hopkins
C - Price, Hopkins

If people think OT is bad now, imagine if Glenn and/or Hart goes down. Yikes.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins

In the case of that unfortunate event, we'd be down to using Kent Perkins or the UDFA guy.

Actually all the indications are that Westerman has been getting the reps with firstt team.

Total bummer, but the right decision on his part.   Clots are nothing to mess with.

We'll miss you Clint.   Have a great 2nd life!

From a cap standpoint, Boling's remaining contract minus $500,000 comes off the books, and now the Bengals have an additional ~$4.5 mill to work with. That puts the Bengals at just above $24 mill in cap remaining.

Yep I know but I assumed it was due to Jerry being brought in just that week prior. Until we see the same happening close to the end of preseason, I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

I think the Bengals will be on the look out for a veteran cut during training camp, which happens relatively often. With that said, Boling was versatile for sure but he was an average level starter at this point. I think we basically swapped Miller for Boling and now have to fill what would have been Redmond's spot, presumably with Westerman.

I said in another thread, by scheme change alone though...I still think we are better this year.
