I may be wrong but it was the Chinese who backed the Vietnamese. It was winnable but you are right about the consequences. If you aren't willing to use your might when sending 50000 young men to their graves you shouldn't go to war. Dropping the bombs on Japan saved by some accounts  millions of lives on both sides. Then there was only one nuclear power then.
