This was a mistake if we cannot get anything for Dalton.

The issue to me is that the team said they were going to try and make sure Dalton landed in a good place.

Just cutting him is not what they said they were going to do.

The key word you said is try.  Whose fault is it there's no such thing as a one team trade?
