One way to think about it is the likely result of a punt. From their 40, you have to try to pin them deep which is pretty difficult to do. You're more than likely going to have a touchback, so it is a 20 yard change in field position. Meanwhile, a 4th-and-1 has about a 55% chance of being converted. That should be a universal GFI situation. It will fail, sometimes, but it will be successful more often than not and really helps your team.
