An interesting idea, but I don't think it fits as neatly as you suggest. The Iphone 3 came out in 2008, so the smart phone rather predates this phenomena. I do agree that social media, which tends to amplify the most extreme voice, thus making them seem mainstream, has a large hand in creating this situation. So I think you've latched on to a solid contributor.
