He was/is an addict.  Gambling has been shown to have the same effect of other addictions like alcoholism.  My Mother is an alcoholic and is a chronic liar.  I once pulled a half bottle of gallon wine out of her purse, right in front of her, accused her of drinking and she denied it.  Kept denying it.  Sain it wasn't hers.  This wasn't the only such incident.  They're pathological and can't help it if they don't seek help for their problem.

My point is, that he was never going to come clean. He never will. He'll lie till the day he dies if he doesn't go into treatment and get help for his addiction.
