Tez takes this D to new levels when he's on the field. This is a good signing. The Bengals essentially said I'll give you 13 million a year to PLAY football. That's a pretty big motivation, right?

Quote:Per a source with knowledge of the contract, here are the details of the deal:
1. $3.3 million signing bonus.
2. 2017 base salary of $7.936 million.
3. 2018 roster bonus of $2 million, due March 31, 2018.
4. 2018 base salary of $3.81 million.
5. 2019 base salary of $5 million.
6. 2020 base salary of $6.188 million.
7. Annual per-game roster bonuses $2.25 million in 2018, 2019, 2020.
8. Offseason workout bonuses of $500,000 for 2018, 2019, 2020.
9. He also has escalators based on Pro Bowl appearances of $250,000 per year, which doubles for two and triples for three, which can (with three Pro Bowl appearances from 2017 through 2019) add another $1.5 million.
Here are the highlights of the deal:
1. The only guarantee is the signing bonus.
2. The $2.25 million per year in per-game roster bonuses in 2018 through 2020 ties a whopping $132,352 to his ability to suit up each and every week. For any absence from the active roster (suspension or injury), the $132,352 disappears.
3. The increase in Burfict’s base salary from $3.95 million to $7.936 million inflates his game checks from $232,352 to $466,823. Which, in turn, bumps the price of his three-game suspension from $697,056 to $1.4 million.

Bengals still have ~$15 mill in cap space left to work out extension for Eifert depending on when they can get it in.

Let's give credit where it's due: To Marvin Lewis for taking a chance on Vontaze Burfict in 2012, to Mike Zimmer and Paul Guenther for believing in him, and developing him, and most of all to Mike Brown for getting who will become his best defensive player in Bengal history some well-earned dinero.
Congratulations to Vontaze himself, of course. He's one of my favorite players because he can put the entire defense on his shoulders and make the other ten men on the field better as a result.

And Dunlap is better than Burfict as well.
Geno especially though; the man is untouchable.

I don't care for this deal because I can't believe any other team was going to offer him anything close to this.
-He's had an extensive concussion history (ended the '16 season missing the last two games due to concussion, missed a couple games in '14 with a concussion) and is one big concussion from missing a season.
-He's had microfracture knee surgery ('14-'15 offseason).
-The NFL is looking to suspend him for ANYTHING even if it's a BS suspension and is one questionable hit away from getting 8 games.
-He showed up in '16 and wasn't even in shape.
-He hurts himself in nearly every game he plays in.
-He's missed 22 games the last 3 years and is already going to miss at least 3 more this year.
There's no question that Burfict is an extremely talented player, but lets face it. He's a pretty shitty investment. I think when Burfict comes back from suspension and inevitably concusses himself again this season, missing 2-3 more games and finishes another season with ~10 games played, or makes an even moderately questionable hit and the NFL goes back to their witch hunt, the Bengals will look awfully foolish knowing that they could have gotten him for more like $8m/yr.

I just question if a defense can be built around a LB that averages playing 11 games a year due to concussions, suspensions, and knee issues.
When he's on the field...our defense is next level.
Are we better off paying a guy to play 11 games a year...or moving on and finding a guy who can play all 16? Time will tell I suppose.
I do love that he plays hard and is a big hitter. He does give us an edge.

If there is a questionable tackle...it's going to go against him...just like the one in the KC game.
Homers are gonna home. You guys can all talk about him like he's going to play 16 games a year and do nothing stupid...but he averages 11 games played a year.
Also, I think this extension makes it more likely that Marvin returns as coach.

And then i was like does this set a good example for Tez considering the suspension he just received? It's like spanking err i mean sending your kid to timeout and then taking them to Chuck E Cheese right after. If the owner feels Tez is being signaled out he needs to ***** speak up. Loudly.
And then i saw the guarantee and now i'm cool with it.
