Lets hope it is indeed a minor setback. I think we're going to need 2017 Wood back down the stretch.
This gives Mahle a chance to learn more at the big league level. He pitches much different than Castillo but they are every similar in the fact that the first year and a half or two of their careers were filled with lots of awesome pitching performances completely ruined by two or three mistake pitches. I like Mahle's ability to pitch with a normal 90-93 MPH fastball but still dial it up to 95-96 when he needs it. Too bad Sal Romano never figured that out.

I don't think Mahle is quite there yet. Red's need Wood to come back and one other pitcher.
This back injury stuff was going on last year. I’m guessing that his starter days are either over or at least numbered. I would baby him now and set a time line for after the AllStar break. I also wouldn’t try to extend him with any kind of starter money, that gamble is too risky for a small market team. Votto’s future production to money ratio will be bad enough.
