My thoughts on loyalty, as it pertains to the OP using the Clay Matthews example? I feel like that is the Packers silently telling Clay that it's time to either retire, or move on, because they're not going to embarrass him with some low ball offer, is a pretty high sign of respect for the man. He was once the co-face of the franchise, but it's clear that his best days are behind him. I'm sure that he's still got a few great plays left in him, maybe a change of scenery will pull another good year or two out of him?
