I don't think losing Bates surprises Bengals-land.

Let's see how the FA window and draft plays out. Duke and Zac have some roster retooling to do; we already knew this as fans going into the offseason.

Bates was never coming back at the point we drafted Hill.
Exactly Hill was picked to replace him last year, we simply cannot afford to pay a FS 14 million+ per season and expect to keep our offensive weapons intact. We simply have to draft well, and hopefully we can net a 3/4 rd comp pick from this.
If Bengals paid Bates big contract then I would find that unexpected.

Believe most expected his departure and hoping it is the Falcons instead of a division foe.
Good, keep him out of the Division, didn't like the thought of him going to Cleveland like Rapien said could happen.
