Look at the NFL.com grades. They give a lot of A's. Some B's. Then a few C's.
No one knows how these guys will turn out. As of now, it was a good roll of the dice.
If we took Porter, Maher, etc...we probably still get an A.
Hysterical that selecting the 17th ranked prospect with the 28th selection would produce any grade other than an "A":
* He fits their scheme
* He fits a need considering Hubbard and Hendrickson played far too many snaps and were gassed down the stretch.
* Porter was the 14th ranked player but probably lower than Murphy on the Bengals board because of scheme fit.
* Mayer was ranked far below Murphy and the league let it be known they did not consider him the first round talent that "experts" did.
Well considering Lamar just got a 5 year deal... we need legs to chase him for the next 5 years...

Exactly, it's almost like if you selected a player in the 1st round that they had rated as a 1st round talent, it validates their ratings of players and therefore you get an 'attaboy' for making them look good. However, if you selected a player outside of the group that they felt should be in that selection range, you made a 'reach' and get a sub-optimal grade for bucking the protocol. But, what if your evaluators saw something in a player that others missed, and they work out just fine? Well, then you got lucky and your 'gamble' paid off..
FWIW, I'm fine with our pick. I feel like it was a bit of a 'safe' pick, but I can rationalize why they went that direction. Quality pass rushers are expensive on the open market, and as much as I like our starting front four, having fresh legs to rotate in keeps the pressure on those opposing QBs.
At 28 we are lucky to get a big guy who can fly. The consensus is he has a nonstop motor. Can’t coach either of those into existence. Also a clear need pick. I wouldn’t call Murphy a “steal” but a quality pick.

Don’t need legs to chase Lamar. You think that dude refused to play hurt until he got his payday. Now see if he plays with a hangnail. He’s soft, and by that I just mean injury prone. It’s no secret that QBs that do what he does don’t last. I give him 2 seasons and ravens will be looking for their next franchise QB

Yeah, NFL.com gave an A to the Los Angeles Rams, who didn't even have a pick. They did that because it was a pick they gave up for Matthew Stafford. But bet the Rams didn't expect it would be the 6th pick in the draft.
Detroit got hammered in their rating for moving up to take Gibbs.
The Bengals assessment of an A had a lot of caveats:

100% wrong about Lamar. Like him or not, the dude is a competitor. The Ravens undersold his injury. Do I think he'll last much longer in the NFL, no. But he will give his all until he's done. Now that his money is guaranteed, I expect him to put it all out there.
I've seen Trey Hendrickson throw up on the sidelines during games because he's so worn out by the end of the 4th quarter.
Anything to help that from not happening anymore I'm down with.
We got zero edge rush from anyone outside of Trey last year. It filled a need with a first round graded player. Good pick.

Biggest question on Lamar is his ability to stay healthy. His injuries the past few years have sabotaged the Ravens chances at a Super Bowl.

Yeah, anything to help Hendrickson. He gives 100%, runs all over the field after the QB, and is held again and again without a call. Totally out of gas after a while, needing to hold onto something to stay upright. I imagine the plan is to rotate the edges and keep everyone refreshed and then the QB pressures and sacks can begin to accumulate.
Pass rush was an absolute joke last season. We've seen what happens when Burrow is running for his life every other play while guys like Mahomes get to just stand back there in the pocket all ***** day long. Mahomes was barely touched the last two games of the year, and he has a Lombardi to show for it.
TE class is deep this year, and we just signed a veteran FA. Burrow will make do with whoever they give him there. Shore up the trenches.
Am always down for pass rushers being added so welcome aboard Mr Murphy.
Thought the Bengals would go a different direction,TE, CB, OT, RB, yet am fine with this pick and willing to watch how the draft unfolds before judging. This pick could be the start of a great draft

I doubt Hubbard will ever play another third down on the edge again.
Love him against the run and as a QB spy, but he just doesn't get much pressure on the QB.
