DEFA was the state owned film production company from East Germany. A lot of great film came from Germany both before and after WWII, but DEFA was kind of unique. Instead of a lot of communist propaganda it felt quite a bit with the ordinary lives of people in Germany before and after the war, the hardships, dealing with the Nazi party and the extreme stigma produced by what went on during and after the era..
There's a lot of DEFA Library films available through your library card on Hoopla if you're interested..
