The vast majority of defensive players are considered how good they are because of the scheme they're playing in. A blanket statement of "try hard(er)" isn't going to do it. Everyone can't just do anything by simply trying harder. Athleticism is more helpful as well as being smart (football IQ). Dismissing scheme is a sure fire way of becoming a worse defense. 

11 starters on defense X 32 teams = 352 guys. Add in their subs. Easily 600+ guys who get significant minutes on different defenses across the league. How many of those guys make All Pro and All Star? The vast majority of them need to be told where to be and when to be there. 

Banket statements never work. You need a mix of good players and good schemes.

Cool, didn't know all of this. Good for Taylor Mays, always liked the guy, I just had far too high of expectations for him as a player.

Yep!

Remember Reggie Nelson? Horrible scheme and position fit in Jax. We acquired him and Zim put him at FS in his primarily Man scheme and the result was Nelson was an upper tier safety for us. Or how Justin Smith was not suited to be a 4-3 pass rush EDGE but SF took him and as a DE in their 3-4 he was a Pro Bowler? The list can go on and on and on. 

I want to see what Golden (if it is him) plans to run because it could affect our offseason plans. For example, if he plans a more traditional 4-3 look then we will be looking for another starting LB (I would assume a MIKE in that case). We'll find out.

Nice posts. To ignore scheme is just plain stupid. Certain players fit or they don't, we have seen it forever in football.

Alright, we have a DC!

Looks like we are finalizing Al Golden as being our new defensive coordinator.  

So it's Golden. Now we'll start finding out what he plans.

I know he was technically under Lou but you know these guys have their own opinions they are different people.

I'm willing to give Golden a shot (as if I have choice)

Happy the search is over and I think Al Golden will be an upgrade over Lou. The question is how much of an upgrade and also who he
brings in for DL coach which is the position coach I am most interested in now.

Not a sexy or splashy hire, but he’s a solid, experienced coach who didn’t cut his teeth as defensive analyst for the US Coast Guard Academy’s Ultimate Frisbee Team.

The guy who did a zero blitz on a 3rd and 14th with the national title on the line?

He's been hired according to Pete Thamel of ESPN

Jerry Montgomery is the new DL coach and Trey Brown is getting a second interview for the Jets GM job per Paul Dehner.

Somewhere there's a crossover joke with Newman saying "We got Al Golden! Al Golden here!....nobody cares"

Hope he brings this defense to the next level (even if that is average)
