And you know this how? If you didn't see anything from Jackson or Jenkins, then you didn't watch any games.
Last year we really got hit by the injury bug on the inside. Remember us wheeling out Lawrence Guy? Having Jenkins, Rankins and Jackson all out at the same time in more than one game? This is more insurance than anything else.

If that part had any truth to it, I feel like they would have added someone a little higher profile than a 3rd string NT.

Pretty spot on!
I really want to see what this Gregory kid has to offer. He had some good stats in college, and they went up every year in college.

Evidently Adams sees himself in a greater role than a vet minimum, back of the roster guy, as he left town without reaching an agreement. But yes, Gregory should be fun to watch in the preseason.

I thought maybe they should have taken a look at Jerry Tillery, ex Notre Damer and could push the pocket

There seems to be a few veteran DL out there that could fit what role the Bengals are looking to fill, Tillery might be worth a look.

If something similar happened this year, you have just 2 DT's while you would be hoping some guys on the PS can contribute in some meaningful way. If that happens then you have to worry about some other team poaching them.
You could say that about any position really.
It happens.
The reality is you can't overly stack every single position.
You have to take risks at certain positions, and you have to craft your PS and play the FA market/waiver wire accordingly throughout the year as injuries happen.
Ultimately, is a 3rd run-only NT with 0 pass rush like Montravius Adams going to be more valuable on the roster than an extra DE, especially if they do believe any of their DEs could kick inside to help rush the passer?
I would argue they already have 4 dudes who can stop the run.
Jenkins, Hill, Jackson, and Slaton are all better at stopping the run than rushing the passer.
All can also play 1T as well if need be.

If that were true, he should have drafted a DT instead of a 2nd LB, and 2nd OG, or a late round RB. Especially after we had already brought in a FA at each spot.
