He is probably my top 3 favorite vocalists.

What a great live singer.  No studio "magic" there!

I always mention this guy in the guitar player's thread... but Rik Emmet is a great rock singer as well.

Not the greatest by any means but damn good IMO.

Just for the record, and they've already been mentioned, but my two favorite Vocalists are

1. Layne Staley
2. Chris Cornell (early, not current)

I've always liked rock singers who have a certain character to their voices. Especially like deeper voices. Not fan of many higher voices, though there have been a few that I liked.

Also like guys like Tom Waits, Dr. John and Leon Russell, guys with very distinctive voices.

Want to mention Van Morrison, who is continuously underrated as a songwriter, musician and singer. His name doesn't come up nearly enough when the conversation turns to the great ones. He wrote probably the two most beautiful love songs ever written, both beautiful without being cheesy.

I think I noticed that no one mentioned a female rock singer. There have been some great ones.

Most Maiden fans that I've known don't think Dickinson is either.  I like Maiden up through Powerslave, but I must say Killers was my favorite.

He is like Ray Alder of Fates Warning who is awesome as well.

Only really known to those who like Prog Metal.

In that genre he is at the top. 

Geoff Tate would be one of those rock unknowns if it were not for "Silent Lucidity". 

Which is not a good representation for him or Queensryche itself.

Operation Mindcrime is one of my favorite albums of all time and some of his best work.
