Many do not realize that
O Brother Where Art Thou is a translation of
Homer's Odyssey.
Just another aspect that makes it great. There is also a concert called "Down From The Mountain" in which the soundtrack is performed live by the original artists.
I love movies, all good mentions
A few I didn't see mentioned though.
Airplane
Master and Commander
Glory
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Boondock Saints
Suicide Kings
Traffic
The Shawshank Redemption
Made
Casablanca
These are just off the top of my head. Sooooo many more
Currently watching "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader"

You need to see it today!

Shawn of The Dead
The Crow
This Is Spinal Tap
Happy Gilmore
Payback
True Romance
The Departed
Airplane
The Ref
Just about anything John Hughes put out, with Plane Trains and Automobiles being one of my favs.
Edit - Almost forgot The Prestige. What a great movie.
The review for "Shark Sandwich" was merely a two word review which simply read "Shit Sandwich".
My friends and I use quotes from that movie all the time.
"It's a Mach piece"
Saving Private Ryan
Tombstone
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Braveheart
Full Metal Jacket
Rocky
Star Wars IV
Brave heart
Tron
Howl's Moving Castle

Bubba Ho-Tep! My favorite Don Coscarelli movie is Phantasm. One of my favorite horror movies ever, did you see that one?

Yeah, a severe lack of comedies on these lists. Also, no Friday so far.

Yeah Friday is the sh*t.
Office Space is another fav comedy of mine. Just like Spinal Tap. A lot of quotes come from that.
Also Better Off Dead as someone had mentioned before.
Damn I almost forgot one of my favorite of all time.
Raising Arizona.
Come to think of it
that movie would probably be in the actual top 5 of all movies. Smart, goofy, and classic shot scenes all in one.
Every time I start thinking of a top 5 I end up with at least a dozen, and I know there are some I am still forgetting. But here is a start. In no order
Apocalypse Now
Hannah and Her Sisters
True Grit
Raising Arizona
Full Metal Jacket
Rocky
The Big Lebowski
This is Spinal Tap
National Lampoon Vacation
The Blues Brothers
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Rear Window
Annie Hall
Taxi Driver
Cape Fear (the newer one)
Cool Hand Luke
Wow, that's tough to narrow down to five. So many good flicks deserve mentining, but I'll stick to the OP's parameters. In no particular order:
M*A*S*H
2001: A Space Odyssey
Jaws
Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid
Dr. Strangelove
I'll start by saying that some of you have total shit taste in movies.
Blade Runner
Apocalypse Now
The Shawshank Redemption
A Clockwork Orange (one of the, if not the most, visually stunning movies of all time)
Goodfellas
Just missing out would be;
Aliens (I love it but the military mistakes made in it bother the hell out of me)
Snatch (I can literally watch this at any time)
L.A. Confidential
Taxi Driver
Excalibur
Pulp Fiction

When I mentioned
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, I meant to list the one in bold and for the life of me could not remember the name. Thought I'd come back to it later, then I forgot about it. Great movie though.
Another I just happened to think of is
The Usual Suspects.
Also I know it's not a movie, but one of the better stand up routines was an HBO special years ago by Eddy Izzard called
Dressed to Kill.
