In 1980 the Bengals and the Forty-Niners each won 6 games. It was the Bengals 3rd straight losing season and the Niners fourth.
In 2018 the Bengals won 6 games and the Niners won 4. It was the Bengals 3rd straight losing season and the Niners fourth.
I smell a Super Bowl re-match. We all know the moves the Bengals have made to improve and we expect them to be more heathy next year. Both teams lost their starting QBs in 2018. Both teams had problems at LB. The Bengals re-signed Preston Brown while the Niners added 25 year-old Pro Bowler Kwon Alexander and 28 year-old Pro Bowler Dee Ford.
Despite only winning 4 games last year the Niners had the #16 offense and #13 defense. They also still have the #3 pick in the draft to improve their team. I think they are going to be the surprise team in the NFL this year.
So the early season match up could be a Super Bowl preview.

The Bengals and 49ers history is very intertwined indeed. Between Bill Walsh and Sam Wyche, the Super Bowls, the west coast Ohio river offense and so on. I'd love a rematch that of course turns out differently.

I can see the headline:
Third time a charm for Bengals
I can also see the subhead:
Cincinnati wins in dirtiest SB ever

I like it Fred, they also have that TE who was great last year and i cannot even remember his name he is so underrated.
Hopefully the 3rd times the charm.

We also played SF during the 1980 regular season and we will again this year. That only happens once every 4 years.

George Kittle. Dude is a stud. They also bring Garoppolo back, who I think is a good QB. They should field a pretty good squad.

I think they have an excellent squad, too good in fact for us to compete at this point. Ah, the Super Bowl days against these guys brings back both fond and bitter memories. Forrest Gregg (R.I.P.) and Sam Wyche, Hu-Dey beer, and the Who-Dey chant ringing out all over the place. I just don't feel we are ready yet with a somewhat rag-tag rookie coaching staff, and our pretty much predictable free agency yet again. I'm afraid the 49ers are way closer than we are, but I'd sure love a rematch. I'd really love for us to build a legitimate Super Bowl contender again but....I think we're a long ways off, I really think we'll be lucky to beat the Browns.

Thanks, yeah Kittle, watched him once last year and he caught a pass and went for like a 70 yard TD. Dude is big, fast with great hands.
Could be the next great TE to compete with Kelce.
BTW, wouldn't mind it if we took Hoch at 11 if we could get an OT like Tytus Howard or Sharping late along with a LB like Mack Wilson, Germaine Pratt or David Long Jr. Hochenson is a rare talent that could change games and he is a great blocker that would help the O-line.

I have no idea how good we will be, but i will say that i believe that we needed a coaching change badly and who knows how our players will respond after having such a stale ass staff for all these years that couldn't motivate a rabbit to jump.

Yes, but they could motivate a turtle to withdraw back into its shell! (Right before getting dropped in boiling water!) There is that!

Not sold on Garoppolo yet... great magic end of year in 2017 but still just a 80 percent rating but his 3 games of last year.. not so great at all.. 1-2 like a 30 percent rating and coming back from a major knee injury.. hmm could you say Palmer and never the same ?

I'm not sold on him either. He's not Young or Montana. He seemingly sat forever behind Brady, but sitting behind someone doesn't make you great. It just makes you the 2nd fiddle.

I'm hoping the new blood will quickly translate into new hope, renewed motivation, and wins.

It'd be a storyline that would help the league sell a Bengals Superbowl appearance.

What an incredible story it would be for those teams to meet in a third Super Bowl.

Exactly and now it is definately possible. That staleness wasn't going to win a Playoff game, let alone a Superbowl.

That is exactly what everyone would have said before the '81 season if anyone mentioned the Bengals going to the Super Bowl after just winning 6 games and being on a three year losing streak.
