Ja' Marr Chase's Contract: Should Bengals let him walk? - psychdoctor - 09-25-2024

Should the Bengals save money for other dire areas and let Ja' Marr walk? I believe Chase and Burrow are a unit and Chase will get the extension, but in theory, would it be better to use the money else where? Is keeping Chase going to lead to the promise land of a Super Bowl victory?

Others are way better at this than I, but Burrow's cap hit will be 16.92 % staring 2025. I am not certain but I do not believe any team has won the super bowl with the QB higher than 14% of cap. You factor in Chase's cap hit at 35 million per and the two players will be near 12% of cap. Therefore, approximately 29% of cap space will be for two offensive players in Burrow and Chase.

Hit the wrong tab somehow but no they shouldn't let him walk. Other teams make this same kind of decision. What are the priorities has to be the decision-making process. It's all in the negotiations.

He would have to have a terrible season for me to even consider it and then most likely not.

Now if for some strange reason we're out of it at the trade deadline and a NFC team is willing to give up something stupid then......

Yes; we should trade him. No, we should not just let him walk in free agency.

Chase is about to get a 4 year, 160 million dollar deal, and with 120 Million in guaranteed money. If you sign him to that deal; then we can kiss signing any other legit players to long term deals in free agency.

On the other hand if you sign Tee to a 3 year, 90 Million dollar deal, and 60 million guaranteed money. You probably could fit 1 or 2 more players who have decent contracts onto the team.

So in essence do you want Chase at 160 or Tee at 90 + a new 3T, + a new NT, + a 1st rd pick , and a 2nd Rd pick.

If they're not going to pay Jamar then they need to pay Tee. But I prefer Jamar.

Mahomes won it last year at 16.52%, and the year before at 17.19%, and it would have been higher last year but they converted some of his 2023 roster bonus into a signing bonus to lower it to 16.52%.

If they don't pay Chase and Burrow is left with Iosivas, Burton, Irwin, and All as his targets, Burrow is going to demand a trade and we'll watch Chase start stacking up All-Pro seasons elsewhere and he'll go into the Hall wearing a different uniform.

Why is this even being discussed

It's never better to "use the money elsewhere" because you end up with mediocre free agents that don't affect the game the same way.

Really? No. We're starting to overreact to what happened Monday night now. Part of it was the freak bad luck of four injured DTs at the same time plus Hubbard's slow recovery and Murphy being on IR. Yes there are problems but let's take a breath.

no way, dumbest thing ever to do. I would lose my mind if they let him walk.

In theory, when you draft a QB like Burrow you aren't supposed to be picking anywhere near the top of the draft where guys like Chase are taken. The only reason we got Chase is because Burrow got IR-ed his rookie season. I realize we are 0-3 now, but the idea is that we aren't supposed to be bad enough to pick a replacement of Chase's caliber until Burrow retires.

I agree with this take.

Nailed it

They need to keep either Chase or Higgins, and Chase is just objectively better. Not only from a talent and impact standpoint, but also an injury standpoint.

Because when doom-and-gloom is the default, when adversity rears its head, some people's answer is to blow everything up and get rid of all the good things.

Starting to overreact?

This. We need a team to offer something as dumb as the Browns/Watson deal to come our way, and then I say goodbye Mr. Chase.

But... Then we're going to have to pay the glass man Tee Higgins. If he makes he even makes it to the end of the season.

I get folks love their Ja'Mar Chase Underoos but I don't consider the OP's thread to be dismissed as "over-reaction".

It would be very hard to get me to watch the Bengals if we let him walk for nothing
