Same draft in which we chose Drew Sample in Round 2.....

RE: Of course we chose Jonah - XenoMorph - 10-11-2024

it was the bigger need at the time

I'm completely making this up, but I feel like the point you made could apply to many years of Bengals draft picks: the guy we drafted and then 3 to 5 players immediately taken right after that became better NFL players.

I wouldn't be shocked if this trend was observed in round after round, year after year!

Not questioning the need, but the level of available DTs dominating today is staggering.

To be fair, since that draft, and before this year's draft, we did choose people to be play on our defensive line:

Renell Wren
Khalid Kareem
Tyler Shelvin
Cam Sample
Joseph Ossai
Zach Carter
Jeff Gunter
Myles Murphy

Yeah and we are playing both Lawrence and Burns on Sunday night.

And we have played Simmons enough and fans really wanted Wilkins this past FA.

Lawrence is an absolute game wrecker. It’s insane that a NT is tied for 2nd in the league in sacks. He has as many as our entire team.

The 2019 draft was a bad year to need an Offensive Tackle. My favorites were Jawaan Taylor and Cody Ford lol. First round though TJ Hockenson, Jeffery Simmons, and Montez Sweat were my guys. Germaine Pratt was my favorite LB prospect they desperately needed.

Only because we drafted a LT in the 1st round while Andrew Whitworth was coming off a 2nd Team All-Pro season, which alienated our possible future HoFer, which meant we were then stuck with starting Ogbuehi (who sucked), so then we needed a new new LT.

Basically an Own-Goal Hat Trick.

shouldve just went best o-lineman available, but Mikey doesnt value guards enough to draft one at 11

and I'm guessing he only has this philosophy because it's written in an old and dusty book on how to run a football team that was authored by his old man.

There was a documentary that came out with Belichik and Saban talking during, I think a Bama pro day and one or the other said they thought Jonah was the best prospect in the entire draft. That was cool for a minute.

Yeah saw this earlier on Twitter;  I'm not going to destroy the FO too hard on this. LT was a major need and it's not like Williams was a major miss. Also if we don't draft Williams that season; Do we draft Chase in 2021?

Chase is amazing, but honestly since we already had Burrow (and thus weren't looking at QBs) as long as we didn't draft Jaycee Horn no matter who else we picked in the top-13 we were getting a really good-to-great player. Pitts, Chase, Waddle, Sewell, Surtain, D Smith, Parsons, Slater... talk about a stacked top of the 1st. It was nearly impossible to mess up that pick so long as you weren't desperate for a QB.

I'll never understand his philosophy of drafting and valuing positions from the outside in. Everyone knows that in order to build a fundamentally sound football team, you work from the inside and progress out. This team has always paid up the money for OT, DE, WR, CB and treated interior OL/DL (save a rare exception or two) along with LB, S, and TE and treated them as tertiary positions that could just be filled by warm bodies.

Yeah. Not looking forward to Lawrence vs the interior O-line.

Hoping the interior can be really solid in this one.

Hindsight is 20/20. Jonah was regarded as maybe the best OT in that draft. But passing on Lawrence or Simmons oh man.

Karras is okayish, but I was always so frustrated while we had a 12-13 year stretch of Kyle Cook, Russel Bodine, Billy Price, and Trey Hopkins manning C. Meanwhile I was watching Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, late-Romo/early-Dak, or the Matt Ryan SB year. They always seemed to have a good Center so that their pocket wasn't collapsed from the inside and they could always step up into it. That interior pressure always seems to be the killer and preventing a QB from being able to set their feet and make quality throws instead of off their backfoot or whatnot.

Now you see the Chiefs trying to three-peat, the Lions become relevant, the Eagles prior to this year (then their C retired).

Could never understand how the Bengals could spend so long undervaluing the only position that touches the ball more than the QB, and is the literal centerpiece of your offense. Seeing Alex Mack go to Atlanta and immediately upgrade their offense both running and passing, and then they went to the SB. It stung. Lol
